Jake Church and Anita Hutchins are a guitar and dance duo. They have been building an artistic world together since meeting at the Metamorphosis Artist Project with Java Dance Company in 2020. This world’s foundation is collaboratively built through deeper exploration of their artistic practices and living their philosophies. Their art comes from their curiosity to play with life.

Jake & Anita’s first work ‘Scrùbi’ is a tool to encourage narratives and task building. It draws the subconscious and offers a framework for the conscious lens. It was first performed with individuals from the general public at the ‘What If the City Was a Theatre’ festival Feb, 2021. The positive reaction it had with children guided them to develop the project for a group format - ‘Workshop Scrùbi’. They currently perform ‘Workshop Scrùbi’ at schools and after school care programmes.

In 2021/22 Jake & Anita performed their artistic gigs under the show name ‘Hey Becky’. Jake & Anita test and solidify miniature ideas with an aim to stay within a 5 min time-frame. These ideas are realised through a multitude of appearances such as, music and dance, songs, choreography, shadow puppets and so on. 'Hey Becky’s’ first performance focused on challenging “what classical music is and the format of dance performance” at the Pōneke Classical Sessions July, 2021. Their second performance at the ‘Get Comfy’ event in June 2022 focused on “being comfortable with what we want to perform without giving into our perceived social expectations”. Our next gig with all new material created over the summer of 2022/23 is called ‘Water & Coins’.

Jake is a classically trained guitarist that evokes character in everything he creates. He explores experimental styles and collaboration to create new-music and mix-discipline compositions. Jake is an artist of his craft who wants to share stories and take the audiences on a journey.

Along with numerous performance accolades, he is a scholar in collaborative practices with Masters of Musical Arts from Victoria University of Wellington. He has performed and gained international recognition for his contribution to the guitar field.

Based in Wellington, Jake is the director of Kākā Guitār tuition based at St Anne’s Church (Northland), St Benedict’s School, and Makara Model School. This guitar tuition service tailors lessons to the ability of the student to help find their musical voice.
